TikTok Introduces New Songwriter Features

The update will allow users to register as songwriters and highlight songs they’ve written

TikTok has announced new features on the app geared towards songwriters. Profiles can display songs they’ve written or co-written under the “Music” tab, which is currently available to artists. Users can also sign up for their account as songwriters to have their profile include a “songwriter” label.

Background:

  • The features were developed after TikTok circulated a survey to 871 songwriters and conducted 18 in-depth interviews.

  • TikTok used this data to gear the update towards discovery, monetization, and increasing awareness of songwriters on the platform.

Accessing the feature:

  • TikTok’s songwriter feature is currently in a closed beta.

  • Interested songwriters and publishers can sign up for a waitlist to gain access (EU / US / ROW).

What they said:

  • Jordan Lowy, Global Head of Music Publishing Licensing and Partnerships at TikTok: "TikTok is unique in its ability to offer songwriters a way to highlight their musical works alongside their own content, helping them to tell stories about their music, their craft, and their lives."

  • Toby Gad, Songwriter (John Legend, Beyoncé, Fergie, Madonna, Leona Lewis): "It's so exciting that this feature allows songwriters to step out from behind the curtain and claim ownership over melodies and lyrics they hold so dear."
