Several major performing arts representative groups have united to launch a new voluntary AI labeling program. Some of the groups involved include the Recording Academy, the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), the American Association of Independent Music (A2IM), the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI), and the Screen Actors Guild (SAG).
Why it matters:
This represents the most significant joint effort from major industry organizations to regulate AI.
How it works:
The program will use two primary labels: “AI-Generated” or “AI-Assisted.”
“AI-Generated” refers to songs with a lead vocal and instrumental melodies generated by AI.
Entire songs generated with a prompt will carry this label as well.
“AI-Assisted” means AI was used to create “some expressive elements” of a song while humans did the majority of the work.
The labels currently do not cover lyrics, compositions, music videos, or cover art.
What they said:
IFPI CEO Vikki Oakley and RIAA Chairman and CEO Mitch Glazier: “Fans want to know whether and how generative AI has been used in the music to which they listen. Given how important human artistry and authenticity are to music lovers all over the world, these labels will provide an immediately understandable and easily scalable approach to transparency. We acknowledge the many ways AI is being used creatively, so we expect to offer fans additional information as adoption of generative AI labeling grows and technology evolves.”
