Udio and GRAI License Dozens of New Patents Detailing How AI Music Can be Created and Monetized
The patents were developed by Music IP Holdings, which is supported by Universal Music Group
Udio and GRAI, two major AI music platforms, have licensed more than 20 new patents defining guidelines for how AI-generated music exists within the industry. Music IP Holdings (MIH), a company launched by Universal Music Group (UMG) and intellectual property firm Liquidax, developed the patents.

These patents concern numerous aspects of AI-generated music, such as moderation, watermarking, licensed distribution, and monetization.
The patents also cover any AI-generated medium, including video content and voice content.
According to MIH’s Chief Operating Officer Paul Ketchel, the approach defines how “AI learns, consumes, and produces derivative content,” which can apply to anything generative.

This is UMG’s latest entry into the world of AI.
The major label already signed a licensing deal with Udio, which is part of the reason Udio is implementing the patents.
UMG is also currently involved in developing Spotify’s AI remixing tool.
