King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard Occupy Top 31 Spots on Bandcamp Chart
The Australian band removed their music from Spotify in July
Australian band King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard currently occupy the top 31 spots on Bandcamp’s digital album charts, with two additional records sitting in the Top 60.
But why:
In July King Gizzard removed their music from Spotify in protest at CEO Daniel Ek’s investment in military defense company Helsing via his Prima Materia investment fund.
In a social media post they stated: “A PSA to those unaware: Spotify CEO Daniel Ek invests millions in AI military drone technology… We just removed our music from the platform… Can we put pressure on these Dr. Evil tech bros to do better?… Join us on another platform.”
That platform would appear to be Bandcamp.
Pay rate:
The band’s music has been set to ‘name your price’ on the platform, meaning fans can pay as much, or as little, as they want.
They’re not alone:
King Gizzard aren’t the only act to remove their music from Spotify following Ek’s investment choices.
Deerhoof, Xiu Xiu and Young Widows have also taken action, while more than 30 artists from Seattle have signaled their intention to do the same.
