Suno Releases New AI Generation Model Built on Licensed Data

Model v6 was developed in partnership with Warner Music Group

Today, Suno has begun rolling out its new AI generation model, v6. This model was developed “in partnership with the music industry.” At this time, that means it was built through the AI music company’s licensing deal with Warner Music Group (WMG). During a press briefing with _New Industry Focus_, Suno also confirmed BMG’s catalog will fuel v6, following the announcement of the licensing deal between the two companies.

Key points:

  • This model was built from scratch using licensed data from WMG.

  • BMG’s data has yet to be fully integrated.

  • Yesterday, Suno announced a new partnership with Believe. This will add the music of participating artists from Believe and TuneCore to the model as well.

  • No data from Sony or Universal Music Group (UMG) was included in the new model.

  • Artists, labels, and other rights holders will receive revenue from Suno with this new model.

  • According to a press release, “As v6 rolls out, [Suno] will retire our previous models and move Suno entirely onto the v6 generation.”

What they said:

  • Jack Brody, Chief Product Officer at Suno: “v6 was trained from the ground up with a new set of data that is different from the data our previous models were trained on.”

  • v6 was “trained on licensed data.”

  • “The way to think about this partnership is not as a data acquisition play.”

  • “This partnership, which is marked by the launch of v6, is the first time the dollars that come into Suno as people participate in music creation is being shared with the broader music ecosystem in a way that is growing the pie for everyone.”

  • Brody said “a vocal minority” have concerns with AI technology.

Background:

Suno’s response:

  • Brody: “What gives us such optimism here is the fact that we are building in a way that we want to bring the artists and the music ecosystem and the industry as it exists today along with us. We want them to help shape this future, and we want to help shape the future with them.”

What’s new in v6:

  • There will be two paid models, v6 and v6-wild. The free model is v6-mini,

  • Here are some of the new features:

  • “Edit part of an existing song using plain language.”

  • “Build a mashup from multiple sources in one request.”

  • “Sample, isolate, and build a new beat in a single workflow.”

  • “Create from a vibe, genre, or mix of inspirations.”

  • “Create with text, audio, images and video.”

  • “Update a single lyric without rebuilding the entire song.”

The goal:

  • Brody said that Suno’s aim is to lower the barrier to entry to making music.

  • This will, in turn, bring “more interest, more demand, and ultimately more dollars” to the industry at large.

What’s next:

  • The next phase of the partnership involves artists opting in to the model.

  • Once that happens, Suno will develop “new product experiences” such as the ability to create direct remixes and derivative works from those artists.
