Downtown Music Publishing to Represent Biz Markie Catalog

The deal includes name, image and likeness rights

Downtown Music Publishing has signed a new deal to represent the catalog of hip-hop pioneer Biz Markie, including representation of the late rapper’s name, image, and likeness (NIL) rights, alongside publishing administration and sync licensing.

Storied career:

  • Biz Markie – real name Marcel Hall – is best known for the 1989 hit “Just a Friend.”

  • His music has been sampled more than 1,500 times by artists including Wu-Tang Clan and the Rolling Stones.

  • Prior to his death in 2021 he collaborated with Jay-Z, Nas, the Beastie Boys, Big Daddy Kane, and more.

  • The Downtown deal arrives on the 40th anniversary of his 1986 debut EP, Make the Music With Your Mouth, Biz.

Catalog details:

  • Biz Markie’s catalog and associated rights are managed under the direction of his widow Tara Hall, who is also executor of the estate.

  • Recorded music assets are managed through Revilo Records.

  • Distribution and catalog services are provided in partnership with Rhino Entertainment and Warner Music Group.

  • Publishing interests are represented through Surrey Lane Publishing and administered by Downtown Music Publishing.

  • The Biz Markie Experience (the recently-launched living archive dedicated to his life and work) oversees NIL rights, intellectual property, and experiential initiatives, with administration handled by Downtown Music Publishing.
