Australian punkers Amyl and The Sniffers were forced to abandon a free show in Melbourne’s Fed Square on the evening of Friday November 15 due to security concerns. They responded by buying the city a drink.
The details:
Organizers of Amyl’s free, all-ages outdoor show at Melbourne’s Fed Square canceled the event minutes before the band were due to play, citing overcrowding.
There had also been multiple breaches of security barriers.
What happened next:
After an initial social media post apologizing for the cancellation, the band did another, announcing $5000 AUD bar tabs at seven of the city’s small live music venues.
This was the entirety of their performance fee.
What they said:
Amy Taylor, vocals (via Instagram): “We're...using our fee to go back to some local venues, so have a drink on us in the AC/DC fashion. 5K at the bar at Last Chance, The Tote, Labour In Vain, Hell's Kitchen, The Curtain, Cherry Bar and Old Bar. There's $5,000 cap on each of those venues... so have a drink on us. We're so sorry, we really wanted to play, I was chucking a tantrum like no tomorrow, you can't imagine it. So sorry, just have some fun tonight.”
