YouTube is Rolling Out New Tools to Monitor AI Likeness

The product is a result of a partnership YouTube and CAA announced last December

YouTube has released a new tool to detect AI-generated likenesses in videos on the platform. The eventual goal is for the program to detect unauthorized use of celebrity likenesses.

How it works:

  • For now, the tool can detect AI-generated likenesses of YouTube creators.

  • The next step is making the tool available to the YouTube Partner Program.

  • This new function builds off YouTube's existing Content ID system, which can scan YouTube videos for copyrighted material such as music and clips of films and television.

  • Videos flagged by the tool will be available for review in the Content Detection section of YouTube Studio.

  • The creator whose likeness was used in the flagged video will then be able to request removal.

  • In order to use the tool, creators within the rollout must provide a photo ID and film a short video of themselves.

Background:

  • YouTube has said to creators that it intends to “protect viewers by keeping the audience from being misled about what you endorse and what you don’t.”

  • Creative Artists Agency (CAA) partnered with YouTube to develop the function.
