UMG Introduces New Education Initiative: Sound Generation

The program aims to increase access to music education around the world

Universal Music Group (UMG) has launched Sound Generation, a new initiative focused on giving young people around the world music education opportunities. The pilot program is happening in the UK.

How it works:

  • The program will support both students and teachers.

  • 10 activities have been curated by music teachers for Key Stage One students.

  • No specifics have been provided as of now. Music Week stated that they were "developed to deliver the diverse range of skills needed across music creation."

  • Lessons were designed to be easily integrated into primary school curricula.

Background:

  • Camden Music Service (CMS) is a lead collaborator on the project.

  • CMS is a partnership between schools in the London borough and the local government.

  • CMS seeks to provide access to music education, with emphasis on students from low-income backgrounds.

What they said:

  • Sharlotte Ritchie, Senior Director, Global Impact & Communications, UMG: “We believe all young people should have access to high-quality music education – but too often we hear this is not the case. Sound Generation is designed to address this challenge globally. The benefits of high-quality music education span learning, development, and wellbeing, and we want as many young people across the UK – and the world – to have access to this as possible.”

  • Gareth Gay, Head of Camden Music Service: “We’re delighted to be working with Universal Music Group UK on a project that puts children’s creativity at the heart of learning. Camden has a long history of innovative, forward-thinking music education, and Sound Generation builds on that spirit by giving teachers fresh ideas, shared expertise, and the confidence to deliver exciting music lessons. Most importantly, it will help more children experience the joy and benefits of a high-quality music education, wherever they are on their musical journey.”
