Warner Music Group (WMG) has formed a creative partnership with Netflix under an exclusive “multi-year first-look deal.”
Why it matters:
The streamer will make documentary series and films exploring the lives, music and legacies of WMG’s artists and songwriters.
WMG’s roster includes legendary heritage artists such as Fleetwood Mac, Madonna, David Bowie, Cher, Led Zeppelin and Eagles, alongside a contemporary lineup that includes Coldplay, Bruno Mars, Ed Sheeran and more.
The deal widens Netflix’s investment in music-related content, following its securing of the exclusive live streaming rights to BTS’s comeback concert and Harry Styles’ One Night in Manchester performance.
Key personnel:
Unigram, a film, theater and music production company run by Amanda Ghost and Gregor Cameron, will serve as the production arm.
It will work with WMG to develop each project in collaboration with the artist or their estates.
As per Music Business Worldwide, Ghost founded Unigram in 2015 with Len Blavatnik’s Access Industries, which is the majority owner of WMG.
What they said:
Robert Kyncl, CEO of Warner Music Group: “The combination of Warner Music Group’s IP with Netflix’s global reach is an incredible opportunity to introduce new fans to our artists and songwriters all around the world.”
Adam Del Deo, VP, Documentary Films & Series, Netflix: “We’ve seen how music inspires incredible fandom on Netflix so we’re excited to partner with Warner Music Group and the best-in-class artists they work with to bring even more indelible music storytelling to our members.”
