Napster has closed its music streaming service, announcing it has pivoted to an AI platform.
Pivot:
As per Digital Music News (DMN), subscribers streaming music on Napster recently experienced a sudden interruption to the service, followed by a splash screen explaining it is no longer a music streaming service.
The message contained a link to playlist transfer tool TuneMyMusic.
It also stated: “We’ve become an AI platform for creating and experiencing music in new ways.”
New direction:
Last week Napster announced Napster Station, an AI concierge.
It follows a collab with paint manufacturer and distributor Comex (PPG) Group, in which Napster launched an AI companion called Sofia to assist customers with paint ideas.
As DMN points out, there’s no word on what happens to the money Napster owes various performing rights organizations.
Backstory:
In January 2025, Napster announced a benefactor had committed around $3.36 billion to the company.
In November, CEO John Acunto told shareholders the funding had fallen through, raising questions about Napster's future.
Napster was acquired by AI company Infinite Reality in March 2025.
