Deezer Launches New Feature Allowing Fans to Remix Tracks

Every remix is created with explicit agreement from the artist

France-headquartered streaming platform Deezer has launched Remix Lab, an in-app feature that allows users to remix tracks from participating artists.

Why it matters:

  • The remix feature has been developed with the prior agreement of artists, and respects rightsholder agreements.

  • It does not use AI, but instead offers audio stems from artists who have opted in.

  • This is in contrast with competitor Spotify, which signed a licensing agreement with Universal Music Group in May allowing fans to create AI-powered covers and remixes.

How it works:

  • A series of contests will be run within Deezer Club, through which fans can remix tracks by Céline Dion (“J’irai où tu iras”), Tiakola (“Meuda”), Alonzo (“18 carats”), Ronisia (“Solide”), Mosimann (“Soon” ft Gaëtan Roussel), Zaho (“Comme Caroline”) and Alain Souchon (“J’ai 10 ans”).

  • Streams generated from the remixed versions – which can be shared and added to playlists – are fully attributed to the original work, and artists are compensated accordingly.

  • Contest winners will be announced in early September, with their remix featured in a dedicated Deezer playlist.

  • The remix tool is only available in France, but could be extended globally in the coming months.

What they said:

  • Alexis Lanternier, CEO of Deezer: "This remix tool perfectly embodies our vision of offering a product that enriches the listening experience for fans, by allowing them to participate in the creative process and create a deeper connection with their favorite music, directly in the Deezer app. True to our DNA, these features are made possible with full participation of the artists, fully respecting rights, and maximizing earnings for each track."
