Famed Synthesizer Manufacturer Roland Launches AI Melody Generator

The program uses technology developed by Sony Computer Science Laboratories

Roland, the instrument maker behind classic synths and drum machines such as the TR-909 and the TB-303, has launched new AI melody generation software called Melody Flip.

How it works:

  • Roland worked with artists throughout the development process to ensure Melody Flip generates ideas in line with how humans create.

  • Users can import audio files from which Melody Flip extracts data such as BPM, key, chord progression, genre, and mood.

  • The program then suggests creative palettes to pair with the provided audio.

  • There are roughly 300 creative palettes pre-loaded into the program.

  • Melody Flip is available as a plugin on macOS and Windows to be paired with digital audio workstations (DAWs) such as Ableton, Logic, and FL Studio.

  • A free trial of the product will be accessible via Roland Cloud Manager in May 2026.

What they said:

  • Roland: “These tools should not replace the artist, but instead, amplify them, supporting a workflow where human intent, taste, and creativity remain at the core, with technology acting as a partner or co-creator, rather than a main creator.”

  • Roland CEO and Representative Director Masahiro Minowa: “Roland has always been committed to supporting the evolution of music culture through electronic musical instruments and production tools. Melody Flip represents a significant step forward in the era of responsibly developed AI, introducing a future in which technology and people work together and elevate creativity. As we move forward, Roland will continue to expand the boundaries of musical expression with innovative products and services that amplify creators’ instincts and connect human sensitivity with the full potential of technology.”
