Beastie Boys Settle Lawsuit with Chili’s Owner Brinker International
Beastie Boys and UMG reach settlements with Chili's parent company over unauthorized music use.
The surviving members of legendary rap trio Beastie Boys are close to settling their copyright infringement lawsuit against Brinker International.
Why it matters:
Brinker International is the parent company of casual dining chain Chili's Grill & Bar.
Beastie Boys sued Brinker last July, alleging the use of the hit song "Sabotage" in a Chili's social media ad (which also mimicked the track's video clip) incorrectly implied their endorsement of the brand.
Following a May 7 mediation, the case is expected to be settled on July 7.
The terms of the agreement have not been revealed.
UMG's complaint:
Universal Music Group (UMG) also filed a suit against Brinker in July, alleging the infringement of numerous recordings and compositions in Chili's social media promo videos.
Following a separate May 7 mediation, a settlement is expected to be reached on July 7.
The terms of the agreement have not been revealed.
