Sony Music Entertainment is one of the world's largest music companies, originally founded in 1929 as American Record Corporation. Acquired by CBS in 1938 and renamed Columbia Recording Corporation, it became CBS Records in 1966. Sony purchased the company in 1988, renaming it Sony Music Entertainment in 1991. Today, SME operates in over 70 countries and houses iconic labels including Columbia Records, Epic Records, and RCA Records.
