Suno Releases Response to Industry Labels for AI Music: “We believe transparency is important”

Numerous large-scale music organizations, including RIAA, IFPI, A2IM, and SAG-AFTRA, collaborated on the labels

Following the introduction of an industry-backed labeling system for AI-generated music, Suno, the largest AI music company, has released a statement.

What they said:

  • Suno via Music Business Worldwide: “This is a nuanced conversation that will require thoughtful solutions, which is why we’re continuing to work with creatives, rightsholders, and platforms on approaches that protect artists while supporting human creativity. We believe transparency is important. We’re investing in watermarking, audio fingerprinting, and other tools that empower artists to disclose if they used AI in a song. We believe that ultimately it should be up to artists and platforms to decide how to treat these complex issues.”

Background:

  • Suno recently launched Spark, a development program for independent artists.

  • The company also recently raised $400 million at a $5.4 billion valuation.

  • Suno remains in litigation with Universal Music Group and Sony Music for copyright infringement.

  • The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), one of the organizations behind the AI labels, is leading the lawsuit.

  • Suno has struck a licensing deal with Warner Music Group (WMG), but recent reporting has shown very little progress in that regard.

  • There are other industry-led campaigns specifically targeting Suno, such as Say No To Suno.
