David Bowie
Heritage of London Trust has acquired the family home of David Bowie, located at 4 Plaistow Grove in the London borough of Bromley. It served as Bowie’s family home between the ages of eight to 20 (1955-1968).
Formative years:
The heritage project is due for completion in late 2027 and will restore the house to its original 1960s appearance.
Working with curator Geoffrey Marsh (co-curator of the ‘David Bowie Is’ museum exhibition) and utilizing never-before-seen archives, the restoration will recreate the interior layout exactly as it was when Bowie lived there.
The site will also host creative and skills workshops for young people.
Fundraising for the project will begin this month; the Jones Day Foundation has already made a donation of £500,000.
What they said:
Geoffrey Marsh: “It was in this small house, particularly in his tiny bedroom, that Bowie evolved from an ordinary suburban schoolboy to the beginnings of an extraordinary international stardom – as he said, ‘I spent so much time in my bedroom. It really was my entire world. I had books up there, my music up there, my record player. Going from my world upstairs out onto the street, I had to pass through this no-man's-land of the living room.’”
