Vocana Launches Sonic Profiler to Aid Independent Music Discovery

Users select three artists to guide future recommendations

Vocana, the streaming service that hosts only independent music, has launched Sonic Profiler to connect users with new artists.

How it works:

  • Upon signing up for Vocana, users are asked to name three artists they love, no matter their genre or era, regardless of whether they’re on Vocana.

  • Sonic Profiler then recommends similar sounding independent artists on the platform.

  • Users can go back to the Profiler at any time and change the artists on their profile to receive new recommendations.

Why it matters:

  • Vocana says that, in an age where music streaming algorithms “serve already-popular music from huge catalogs for mysterious reasons,” Sonic Profiler improves music discovery by surfacing “underexplored gems and unexpected acts” tailored specifically to a fan’s taste.

What they said:

  • Heather Mundinger, Vocana’s Head of Marketing: “We recently brought this feature to an in-person activation, and we heard over and over, ‘Wow, this sounds just like me.’ Fans accepted the challenge of narrowing down their top three artists and were surprised by how accurate the recommendations felt. That’s exactly what we want Sonic Profiler to do: make discovering independent music easy and personal, whether you’re an indie expert or just curious.”
