Leading figures from the UK music industry have formed Breaking Wave Group (BWG).
What is it:
BWG describes itself as a “boutique and bespoke musical powerhouse where creative legacy meets commercial expertise.”
It seeks to provide an alternative to the major label model, with a curated roster of artists that receive “the time and attention they deserve.”
It will operate four pillars for artists: record label, music publishing, artist management, and special projects (cross media and IP generation).
BWG has secured distribution deals with [PIAS] and VMG (both part of Universal Music Group).
Who’s involved:
Jeremy Marsh, Chief Operating Officer, has been MD and President for companies including Virgin, RCA, BMG and, most recently, Warner Music Group, where he served as Vice Chairman, EVP of International and Global CMO.
He played a key role in launching and developing the careers of Dua Lipa, Ed Sheeran, Annie Lennox, Soul II Soul, Take That, Neneh Cherry and many others.
Marc Marot, Chief Creative Officer, oversaw the career of U2 for 18 years.
During his tenure as Managing Director of Island Records, the label signed Tricky, Pulp, PJ Harvey, The Cranberries, Nine Inch Nails and NWA.
Upon leaving Island he set up a management company guiding Paul Oakenfold, Richard Aschroft and more, and most recently played a role in the management of Jessie J, Ella Henderson and Becky Hill.
Chief Legal Officer James Radice was the former SVP Legal and Business Affairs at Warner Music Group, and held similar roles at EMI, Polydor and Universal.
Nick Stewart, Chairman, signed U2 to Island Records, and during his career at Island, Polygram, Sony BMG and Warner Music worked with Grace Jones, Sir Elton John, Dire Straits, Blondie, and more.
General Manager Beth Claridge has more than two decades of industry experience, working on campaigns for U2, Neil Diamond, The Eagles, INXS, Stevie Wonder, 50 Cent and more.
Debut signings:
BWG is the new label and management home for legendary pop group 10cc, and multi-platinum British singer-songwriter Rumer.
Both will release new albums through Breaking Wave.
Electronic duo Lemon Jelly are also part of the management and label roster.
In addition to these established artists BWG has signed emerging singer-songwriter Sofiyah Tusi (label and management) and indie band Patience Please (label).
What they said:
Nick Stewart: “The modern music industry is suffering from a terminal case of 'time poverty.' Algorithms have replaced A&R and artists are being signed and dropped at breakneck speed. Many artists and their managers just don't feel they get the time of day from labels anymore. Breaking Wave Group is the 'Safe Harbor' in this storm. By deliberately keeping our roster small, we are bringing back the lost art of artist development, giving both heritage acts and new talent the dedicated time and creative attention they deserve.”
