Spotify Announces Long-Awaited Lossless Audio Streaming
The feature has been in the works since 2021
Spotify will finally add lossless audio quality streaming to its app. Throughout October, premium users in over 50 countries will gain access to the hi-fi option.
How it works:
The lossless streams will run 4-bit/44.1 kHz FLAC. These specifications deliver the original audio quality without any compression.
Australia, Austria, Czechia, Denmark, Germany, Japan, New Zealand, the Netherlands, Portugal, Sweden, the US, and the UK are already receiving notifications that the feature will soon be available.
A second notification will come when the lossless update is complete.
Once it’s been added, go to Settings and Privacy > Media Quality and select “Lossless” quality for streaming on Wi-Fi, cellular data, and downloads.
The feature has to be enabled on each device separately.
Devices connected over Bluetooth will not be able to stream lossless due to bandwidth limitations.
Spotify said that “nearly every track” will be compatible with lossless audio. So some tracks may be without it.
Spotify is notably late in providing this update. Apple Music added lossless in 2021. Amazon Music added it in 2019.
