IFPI Implements AI Rules for the Global Charts Under its Umbrella

This comes after a coalition of major music companies proposed a series of rules for how AI music should chart across the industry

Yesterday (July 29), all three major labels and a series of prominent indie music companies shared [a series of rules](https://newindustryfocus.com/articles/all-three-major-labels-unite-to-propose-rules-for-how-ai-generated-music-should-chart) for how AI music should be considered in traditional chart placements. Today (July 30), the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) implemented those same rules in its network of global charts.

How it works:

  • The IFPI will only consider an AI song for its charts if three criteria are met:

  • Any AI service used must be “properly authorized and lawful.”

  • The track is “substantially human-made.”

  • The track does not “raise stream or chart manipulation concerns.”

Global footprint:

  • IFPI has applied these rules to charts based in Latin America, the Middle East, Africa, and Southeast Asia.

  • It is also in the process of expanding to Australia, Germany, France, and South Korea.

What they said:

  • Victoria Oakley, CEO of IFPI: “Official music charts do more than just track sales; they celebrate human artistry and endeavor. As fans, we want to recognize the achievements of the artists creating the music we love, and it’s right that charts continue to showcase music with human creativity at its heart.”
