Chris Brown Sued Over Rights and Royalties Dispute
Artist Steve Chokpelle claims Brown released their co-writes without crediting or paying royalties
R&B singer Chris Brown is the subject of a new lawsuit filed by Steve Chokpelle, an artist who performs under the name Muso.
The allegations:
Chokpelle claims to have written lyrics for the songs “Sensational” and “Monalisa” but alleges he is yet to receive royalties.
Though credited as a co-writer on “Sensational,” he claims when Brown’s company and label registered the song with the US Copyright Office, his contribution was not listed, as per Complete Music Update.
The lawsuit claims this was “in violation of the law” and “an act of fraud.”
Chokpelle also states he remains uncredited on “Monalisa.”
Damages:
Chokpelle is asking the court to declare he co-authored the two songs and therefore co-owns the copyrights.
As per Complete Music Update, the lawsuit also argues that Brown et al “should be held liable for unjust enrichment, fraud and breach of fiduciary duty, and – as a result – be ordered to pay millions in damages.”
