Chris Brown Sued Over Rights and Royalties Dispute

Artist Steve Chokpelle claims Brown released their co-writes without crediting or paying royalties

R&B singer Chris Brown is the subject of a new lawsuit filed by Steve Chokpelle, an artist who performs under the name Muso.

The allegations:

  • Chokpelle claims to have written lyrics for the songs “Sensational” and “Monalisa” but alleges he is yet to receive royalties.

  • Though credited as a co-writer on “Sensational,” he claims when Brown’s company and label registered the song with the US Copyright Office, his contribution was not listed, as per Complete Music Update.

  • The lawsuit claims this was “in violation of the law” and “an act of fraud.”

  • Chokpelle also states he remains uncredited on “Monalisa.”

Damages:

  • Chokpelle is asking the court to declare he co-authored the two songs and therefore co-owns the copyrights.

  • As per Complete Music Update, the lawsuit also argues that Brown et al “should be held liable for unjust enrichment, fraud and breach of fiduciary duty, and – as a result – be ordered to pay millions in damages.”
