Founded in 2018 by Merck Mercuriadis and Nile Rodgers, it acquires and manages music rights and intellectual property. The company generates revenue through licensing, streaming, and other commercial uses of its owned songs and catalogs. Blackstone Inc. acquired Hipgnosis Songs Fund in July 2024. Sony Music Publishing acquired Hipgnosis Songs Fund in June of 2025.
