Salt-N-Pepa
Artist manager and music executive Troy Carter has acquired the catalog of legendary label Pop Art Records, an early pioneer in hip-hop.
Why it matters:
Lawrence Goodman founded Pop Art in Philadelphia in the early 1980s.
The label is credited with putting the city on the hip-hop map.
Its catalog includes “The Show Stoppa,” Salt-N-Pepa’s first-ever release when they were called Super Nature.
Also included is Roxanne Shanté’s 1984 debut “Roxanne’s Revenge,” widely considered the first diss track in hip-hop history, and MC Shan’s “The Bridge.”
The terms of the deal have not been disclosed.
What they said:
Troy Carter: “These are songs and artists who shaped my childhood and inspired me to pursue a career in music. I’m looking forward to seeing a new generation discover these gems.”
