Music Venue Trust Announces New Action Items to Support UK Grassroots Venues

The organization has defined initiatives for the funding it received from the £1 ticket levy on large concerts

Music Venue Trust (MVT) has unveiled a series of new initiatives to further its mission of supporting independent venues in the UK. The funding for these plans came from the UK grassroots ticket levy, newly formed partnerships, and funding from LIVE Trust, another organization that shares MVT’s mission.

Follow the money:

  • According to MVT’s new literature, Developing The Future of Grassroots Music Venues, the funding will go toward the following upgrades:

  • Venue MOT is a “digital diagnostic tool” to help venues maximize their cash flow and reduce expenses to ensure long-term solvency.

  • The Emergency Response Hardship Fund is dedicated to supporting venues in dire need.

  • Off The Grid installs solar and other sustainable power solutions to reduce energy costs while supporting the environment.

  • Stay The Night builds overnight accommodations into grassroots venues, so artists don’t have to pay for separate housing on tour.

  • Feel At Home upgrades artists' spaces, such as green rooms, to ensure a more comfortable experience.

  • Raise The Standard increases the quality of technical gear, such as sound and lighting, at venues. This also prevents venues from having to shell out the money for upgrades from their own budgets.

  • Venues can participate in Everywhere At Once, a national coalition of events where venues that agree to host gigs over a chosen weekend will become part of a unified press and marketing campaign.

What they said:

  • Beverley Whitrick, COO of Music Venue Trust: “Grassroots music venues cannot keep being expected to survive on goodwill and admiration alone. If the UK music industry is serious about protecting the talent pipeline, then it has to get serious about the economics that underpin it. This funding and the initiatives we are delivering are about practical change, lowering costs, improving infrastructure, rebuilding touring, and creating a sector that is more resilient, more investable, and fit for the future. Our goal is clear: don’t just fund problems, fix them.”
