US performing rights organization BMI has announced it will acquire Soundmouse, a global leader in music cue sheet reporting and monitoring for the broadcast and entertainment production industries.
Why it matters:
BMI says that by combining each company’s expertise in domestic and international cue sheet generation it will create “the largest and most comprehensive cue sheet database in the global audiovisual marketplace.”
What are cue sheets?
Cue sheets report musical elements included in films, TV shows, commercials, video games and other projects.
They enable rights organizations such as BMI to secure royalties for their members in the composer and publishing communities, and increase visibility for songwriters, composers and publishers worldwide.
As per BMI’s press release, Soundmouse uses cutting edge technology, including AI, to simplify and automate the creation of cue sheets.
The deal:
BMI will purchase Soundmouse from global technology company Orfium.
BMI says the transaction will be funded through its operating cash and will not impact royalty distributions.
The organization says it plans to operate Soundmouse as an independent company, and will remain one of its biggest clients.
BMI’s President and COO Todd Horvath will oversee the company’s operations.
The deal is expected to close by mid-2026.
What they said:
Mike O’Neill, CEO, BMI: “This acquisition is just one element of our plans to invest in technology and expand the services we offer to our songwriters, composers and publishers. The global audiovisual marketplace is one of the fastest growing sectors of our industry, and the income stream it provides for our creators continues to grow in importance. By establishing the most comprehensive cue sheet database in the industry, BMI will be in the best position to collect and distribute the royalties our songwriters, composers and publishers are entitled to whenever their music is used in an AV production, anywhere around the world.”
