Shanghai Symphony Orchestra

Founded in 1879, the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra (SSO) is the oldest Chinese symphony orchestra. Originally known as the Shanghai Public Band, it expanded to an orchestra in 1907 and was renamed the Shanghai Municipal Council Symphony Orchestra in 1922. It adopted its current name in 1956. The SSO plays a significant role in the development of symphonic music in China and is recognized internationally.
