YouTube Will Automatically Label AI Videos With New Detection Software

Creators won’t have to disclose when AI was used for the system to identify it

YouTube has announced that the platform will automatically label videos that use realistic AI-generated content, even when creators don’t voluntarily disclose the use of AI. This comes after it will roll out “new internal signals” to identify AI content starting this month.

How it works:

  • Videos that are discerned to include “significant photorealistic AI use” will receive a specific label.

  • Such use applies to the likeness of celebrities and other prominent figures.

  • The label will apply to music videos that use realistic AI-generated content. Videos that use animated or "unrealistic" imagery will get a different, less prominent label.

  • YouTube will still require creators to disclose whether a video uses realistic AI, but this update provides a second layer of detection.

  • Creators can dispute incorrectly tagged videos in YouTube Studio.

  • Some AI disclosures will be permanent, such as when the video uses YouTube’s AI tools or includes C2PA metadata that shows it was a fully AI creation.

  • For long-form videos, the disclosure will live between the video player and the description.

  • For Shorts, the label will be an overlay to the video.

What they said:

  • YouTube: “These changes are designed to balance transparency with creator control. It’s important to note that a disclosure label alone does not change how a video is recommended or whether it’s eligible to earn money. In a world where AI is changing what’s possible, our goal is simple: make it as easy as possible for creators and viewers to have the right information.”
