Warner Chappell Music Launches India Branch

Jay Mehta will lead this new arm of the major label

Warner Music Group has announced its publishing arm, Warner Chappell Music (WCM), is launching in India. Jay Mehta, Managing Director of Warner Music India, will lead this new division.

Background:

  • WCM previously employed a sub-publishing model in India.

  • This update marks the launch of direct business operations in India, giving Indian songwriters the strongest possible support from the WCM and WMG ecosystem.

  • The global trade body, the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry, recently ranked India as the 15th largest recorded music market.

  • Bollywood soundtracks have fallen from 80% of digital consumption to less than half, clearing the way for a more diverse palette of music in the country with the world’s largest population.

The people:

  • In his new role, Mehta will lead recorded music and publishing operations in India as well as in other South Asian countries.

  • Mehta will report to Guy Moot, Co-Chair and CEO of Warner Chappell Music, and Lo Ting-Fai (Lofai), President, Warner Music APAC.

What they said:

  • Mehta: “India’s songwriters are world-class, constantly redefining genres and pushing creative boundaries.  By establishing a direct footprint for Warner Chappell, we’re bridging the gap between local brilliance and global opportunity.  We’re now positioned to offer Indian creators the sophisticated resources and international reach that only a world-leading publisher can provide, ensuring their music resonates on a global stage.”

  • Robert Kyncl, CEO of WMG: “India is a key part of our global growth strategy, and the talent emerging there is truly world-class.  By bringing our publishing and recorded music operations under Jay Mehta’s proven leadership, we’re creating a unified powerhouse that can better serve creators and fans alike.  This is the right moment to double down on our investment in India’s vibrant creative economy.”
