Universal Music Greater China (UMGC) has announced a “strategic global alliance” with David Tao and his company Great Entertainment.
The arrangement:
Under the new agreement, Tao has released his eighth studio album, and first in 12 years, called Stupid Pop Songs.
Tao’s Great Entertainment company is also tied into the deal and will leverage the major’s “global infrastructure and creative network” to help grow Tao’s profile internationally.
Wider picture:
Universal Music Group is making a concerted effort to expand its China operations.
In September 2024 it launched new label division Universal Music China Greater Bay Area in Hong Kong and Macau.
In November UMGC announced it would release music from contestants in reality program The Rap of China.
Also in November UMGC partnered with Beijing-based label Modern Sky.
In May 2025 it signed a global distribution deal with Qian Lei-founded Brave Music.
