UMG Signs Licensing Deal With TYGER, a Gaming Music Service That Adapts Songs Using AI

Universal Music Group (UMG) has signed another major AI licensing deal. This time, it’s with TYGER, a service for video games that uses AI to adapt songs to real-time gameplay.

How it works:

• UMG will license pieces of its recording and publishing catalogs to TYGER’s paid and free tiers.

• TYGER users can listen to music alongside games such as Fortnite and Roblox. The service’s proprietary AI technology adapts the music to what’s happening in the game.

• TYGER can operate on PC, console, and mobile without studio integration.

Background:

• TYGER’s library currently has over 400,000 songs from mostly indie artists.

• The company is currently in beta, but plans to launch later this year. Interested parties can join a waitlist.

What they said:

• Michael Nash, EVP & Chief Digital Officer at UMG: “At UMG, we have a well-established track record of exploring and developing new creative and commercial opportunities that enable our artists, songwriters and labels to better connect with music fans. We believe that music has a more integral role to play in gaming and through this innovative new licensing agreement with TYGER, our artists and their music will now be able to soundtrack personalized gameplay experiences and connect with millions of gamers and fans around the world.”

• Nick Venti, CEO and Co-Founder of TYGER: “Gaming is where the next generation spends its time, discovers culture and connects with friends, but music has never had a native way to reach those audiences. This agreement with Universal Music Group is an important milestone for TYGER and validates our vision for the future of music in and around interactive and digital experiences.”
