Spotify Introduces ‘AI Persona’ Badge to Mark Fully AI Artists on the Platform

Uploaders can self-designate the label, but Spotify will also add the label to profiles

Spotify has introduced another element of AI transparency on the platform in the form of a new label: AI Persona. This label will be added to profiles that represent artists fully generated by AI.

How it works for uploaders:

  • Uploaders can manually add the label to profiles if it represents an AI-generated character rather than a human artist.

  • Spotify will also add the label to profiles that appear to represent an AI-generated artist even if the uploader doesn’t self-disclose.

  • Spotify will initially scrutinize profiles that have a certain-sized audience.

  • Spotify has opened the opportunity for uploaders to add the designation. It will begin adding the label mid-September.

  • Uploaders will be able to appeal decisions made by Spotify.

How it works for listeners:

  • By default, any profiles with the AI Persona badge will not be included in editorial or algorithmic recommendations.

  • However, if users follow a profile with the AI Persona badge, that artist can be included in recommendations.

  • Users can tap the AI Persona badge to see if the profile willingly admitted to being AI-generated or if Spotify had to designate it.

  • Users will be able to report accounts to Spotify that they believe are AI-generated.

What they said:

  • Spotify: “Although there’s a broad spectrum in how artists use AI as a creative tool, the question of whether a profile represents an actual human is one where Spotify can help make a clear determination. This badge is about the artist’s public identity, not about how the music was made.”
