SOCAN Partners with Musical AI to Strengthen AI Protections for Creators

Canadian Performing Rights Organization SOCAN has partnered with rights management technology company Musical AI to help songwriters, composers and music publishers control how their works are used and compensated as artificial intelligence reshapes the music industry.

Guiding principles:

• The collaboration is founded on the principle that music creators should decide how their work participates in AI, and that all AI use should occur on an opt-in basis.

• The second guiding principle is that music creators must receive credit and compensation when their work influences an AI-generated output.

• Musical AI says its attribution technology analyzes AI-generated outputs and traces exactly what source material influenced it, down to specific percentages.

Partnership details:

• SOCAN will work with Musical AI to explore appropriate uses and guidelines for attribution technologies in Canada.

• This includes ways Musical AI can support SOCAN’s efforts to provide attribution from AI outputs for the purpose of appropriately compensating songwriters, composers and music publishers.

• SOCAN will recognize Musical AI as an approved technology partner for attribution services and related initiatives.
