Primary Wave Secures Deal for Dave Brubeck’s Catalog and Image Rights

The publisher has partnered with Derry Music Company

New York headquartered music publisher Primary Wave has announced a partnership with Derry Music Company, which includes jazz legend Dave Brubeck’s catalog of music, publishing copyrights and recordings.

Also in the deal:

  • Primary Wave will also share in the licensing of Brubeck’s name, image and likeness rights.

  • It will provide Derry Music Company with access to its marketing team and publishing infrastructure, working closely on new marketing, branding, digital and sync opportunities, as well as film and television projects.

Accomplishments:

  • Over his six-plus decade career Brubeck was responsible for some of the world’s most iconic jazz music.

  • Notable songs include 1959’s “Take Five,” recorded by the Dave Brubeck Quartet, as well as “In Your Own Sweet Way,” “It’s a Raggy Waltz,” and more.

  • He was designated a “living legend” by the Library of Congress.

  • He was declared a Jazz Master in 2000 by the National Endowment for the Arts.

  • He was inducted into the American Classical Music Hall of Fame in 2003.

  • In 2007 he received a Living Legacy Jazz Award from the Kennedy Center and the Arison Award from the National Foundation for the Advancement of the Arts.

What they said:

  • Primary Wave’s John Luneau: “I’ve worked on dozens of acquisitions for Primary Wave in the 15 years I’ve been with the team, but this one is personal. Dave Brubeck and his classic Quartet were my first musical idols – three years before the Beatles! – and remain so still. It’s the honor of my career to help bring about this brilliant marriage of Dave’s musical genius with Primary Wave’s skill at preserving and expanding the legacies of iconic artists.”
