GEMA Debuts Copyright-Cleared Music Dataset for AI Developers

German collecting society GEMA has unveiled a copyright-cleared music dataset for training AI models.

Why it matters:

• By bundling sound files, metadata, and both composition and master rights in a single licensed dataset, PLAI by GEMA aims to simplify access to – and reduce legal uncertainty around – AI training data.

• GEMA says the dataset is the first of its kind in Europe.

• It comes as GEMA awaits a ruling in its copyright case against AI music generator Suno, which it alleges trained its music-generation tool on unlicensed copyrighted recordings.

AI assistance:

• GEMA says PLAI by GEMA is aimed at AI music tools that assist creators during the production process, not those whose outputs compete with the music on which they were trained.

First client:

• PLAI by GEMA’s first client is AI music transcription company Klangio.

• As reported by Music Business Worldwide, the dataset being used by Klangio features around 178,000 recordings across 60 genres.
