Brazil Enacts ‘Taylor Swift Law’ to Protect Fans

Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has signed two decrees dubbed the ‘Taylor Swift Law’ to safeguard fans at large cultural events.

Taylor’s Law:

• The first decree stipulates that events with over 1,000 attendees must provide free access to drinking water.

• It follows the death of 23-year-old fan Ana Clara Benevides Machado, who collapsed at an Eras show in Rio de Janeiro from heat exhaustion, amid temperatures of 39 degrees.

• The second decree targets abusive ticket resale and mass purchases through automated systems.

• Resale platforms are required to clearly display the original ticket price, additional charges, and any amounts charged above the nominal price.

• Ticket transfer through official platforms must also be available at no extra cost to the consumer.

• High-demand events need to establish mechanisms such as virtual queues, pre-registration, and ticket limits.
