Online dance music store and streaming platform Beatport has updated its Content Guidelines, announcing that fully or majority AI-generated tracks will not be permitted on the platform. They will be withheld during ingestion, with rightsholders notified directly.
AI exception:
Music that is primarily human made but created with AI assistance will still be accepted.
The releases will be tagged during ingestion, so Beatport’s curation team has a clear picture of what it’s reviewing and featuring.
Detection tool:
To facilitate the updated Content Guidelines, Beatport has expanded its partnership with music fraud detection specialist Beatdapp, which can distinguish between fully generated and AI-assisted tracks.
The companies initially partnered to combat streaming fraud.
Community approval:
A recent survey of Beatport’s users revealed 60% of DJs said they would not play AI-generated tracks in their sets.
Only 8% were open to playing those tracks; 13% would consider it if artists and labels were fairly compensated.
What they said:
Matt Gralen, Beatport CEO: “Beatport exists to serve DJs and empower artists & labels. This means partnering with our community and providing confidence in what our platform offers. While new production techniques have driven electronic music forward since the beginning, there is a difference between a tool that assists human creation and a system that replaces it entirely. Beatport is built on the former.”
